In the distance the light from the lighthouse flickered dimly through the thick mist that hung over the land and sea ominously . The loud fog horns of the hips could be heard over the crashing of the sea against the rocky shore . The evanessant moon was low in the sky and Vinny walked slowly on the bridge , through puddles of water , his polished boots thumping the pavement as he strode fast and hard . He stopped and rested against a pylon . He felt the cold against his cheek and a trickle of ice run down his neck . He flinched and climbed over the railing and felt his boots thud against the rough concrete . He had always been afraid of heights but the darkness and mist hid whatever was below . He then realized he was not alone on the bridge and then heard her sobbing away to his right . He pulled out his lighter and pressed the button . She was huddled a metre or so away from him against a pylon drenched to the bone and shivering . He said "Hello" . She looked at him then said " Leave me alone " . At that moment a delivery truck some 100 m or so away began to move away and  with it the mist seemed to follow it slowly . He switched off the lighter and waited until his eyes adjusted . He could hear her teeth chattering away. He took off his coat and then sat on the cold ledge next to her . "Stay away ," she warned. He recognized her voice now . "Candice " his voice croaked . Her eyes grew wide . " Vinny? " she asked  . "What are you doing here ? " she asked . He looked up at her and said "I was hoping you would answer that first , " he replied . " I asked you first ," she said with venom . He looked at her and then said , " Always wanted to be on this side of the bridge ." " Very funny," she told him . " I will tell you if , if you wear this coat ," he said . " You will freeze ," she said . "I will be okay ," he said . She took the coat from him and covered herself . She looked at him for a while and then said " I'm waiting ." After a while he said ," I wanted to jump ." " Come near ," she whispered. He slid closer and then she slapped him with venom. His head clunked against the concrete wall . " Are you mad ?" she scolded him . She then  to hit him over and over and over again until she could not hit him anymore . She sobbed uncontrollably then cried , " I hate you . Just leave me alone ." He looked at her and told her " I can't leave you alone on this bridge . I can't watch you teeter on the edge ." He then said wryly ," there's a hip flask in my left inside pocket . May I have I please ?" She reached into the pocket and found the flask and then gave it to him . He opened it and gestured for her to drink from it . She thought of hitting it away but took it in her hands and felt his hands . She took a sip of it . It was rum and coke and she coughed but took another sip. After a minute or so he had stopped sobbing . " I don't want to live anymore . I don't want to be hurt anymore " , she said . He looked at her and said ," Neither do I ." He paused then said , " Let's do it together ." A few more seconds and he said, " suicide is painless" She looked at him again , " you are mad ,absolutely insane ." He looked at her and said ," I am." " Let's get off here , " he said . " my piles are going to kill me ." She looked at him and nodded . He took the flask and coat from her and helped her to climb over . As she climbed over her dress rode up her thigh all the way up to her red underwear . He felt something powerful and stirring and immediately felt his manhood rise . " And now ? " she questioned . " Give me a minute , " he said . She looked at him , " if you jump I'll jump after you " He then jumped over hiding the bulge behind the coat and then covered her . It was starting to rain and they had to run for cover .They found shelter in a bus stop but soon decided to make a run for next one . They had just made it when the deluge began . She huddled against the corner of the bus stop and covered herself . He shivered and his teeth chattered . She then moved over to him turned around , pushed herself against him put his right arm over her body then pulled the coat over . She then told him "I think I'm sitting on your hip flask . " He said , "I think that's my phone " He found the flask and she soon was drinking from it And just as the rain burst forth from the heavens she told him about how her boyfriend had slept with her best friend and that she had found out earlier on that morning . She poured her heart out to him and he listened . She then hugged him and told him," you smell wonderful ." He then paused thinking of what he was going to write next . His cellphone went off and answered it . " I'll be there in five"  he said . He slipped the letter he was writing into his pocket then sped off . " She's in the room ," her mother said ," and won't speak to anyone ." He knocked on the door and she screamed " go away!". " Its Vinny ," he told her . After three minutes the door opened and he went in . She was dressed in a white sleepshirt and there were bottles of tablets all over the bed . " you did not take any, did you ? " he asked her . She shook her head and started to sob . She then hugged him and he held her uncomfortably , feeling her warmth and her intoxicating fragrance . She then looked felt the paper sticking out of his jacket pocket and then took it . " What is this?". She asked He tried to grab it but she was to fast and teased him . They wrestled for a while until she broke loose . She then rolled up the paper and slipped under her sleepshirt . " Come and get it" she teased him .  He looked at her and said , " Its yours " She felt confused yet said " I know you wouldn't do that. You are too much of a gentleman ." She felt for the piece of paper and as he turned the other way and closed his eyes she fished it out . She opened it up and read it . After a minute he turned back and she said , " Please don't go ." He looked confused then realized that she had read the conscription notice . " I have to," he said . " I have to ." She started crying and held on to him . He looked into her eyes and saw her melt . He felt her hot breath and bent down towards her . The loud knock on the door interrupted what would have been a kiss and despite her protests he opened the door . She promised to write but did not . He had all but given up hope when he finally got a letter from her saying that she was married and had two kids and living it large in the United States . In the cold night he shivered and the tears flowed . He did not have much more time to feel sorry as the next barrage of mortars came whistling in . In the morning he crawled out . The entire platoon was dead . Bodies were everywhere . He heard someone moaning and found a soldier lying in the mud ." I'm here now, " he reassured the soldier . As he pulled the soldier to safety he felt something thud against his left rib . After he got  to safety he collapsed . He woke up in a hospital next to a soldier that was moaning . "Its okay now ," the nurse reassured him . He then saw Angelina and passed out
